Halloween is a party that we celebrate the night of the October 31st. The name of the festivity is actually All Hallows Evening and it’s the eve of All Hallows Day. This day was an ancient Gaelic and Celtic celebration for the end of the summer and the beginning of the winter, the darkest period of the year. In this day, it was believed that dead souls and fairies could come back to real life, or, at least, they had an easier way to return. People made ghost costumes to go unnoticed by the deads. Time after, the christian influence become this festivity a tribute to the deads, making altars, as nowadays we can see in South America. At this time of the year we can see lanterns, which are used to frighten evil spirits. The houses are decorated with horrific traditional colors, pumpkins, lights or with literary monsters like witches, Frankestein’s monster, vampires, etc. Also the typical costumes can be from ghosts to all kinds of monsters that fantastic and horror literature has given to us through the centuries. In Spain, we celebrate it because this tradition was transmitted through the colonialism to North America, who, at the same time, influenced the spanish colonies in South America, and these colonies, which had a similar familiar party related to the death souls, influenced Spain and some parts of Europe. Now, with the globalisation and the big economical importance of the english countries, this celebration is becoming more and more popular around the world. We’ve renovated this festival with games and the trick-or-treating culture, which it’s more present in America these days. Halloween, in conclusion, wasn’t a party to afraid the others but to be afraid of the evil souls that could appear this night. In addition, this year it’s said that a Blue Moon can take place, which means that there are two full moons in a month when it’s usually just one per month. In this second one, the possibilities of ghosts entering into our lives are bigger than in other times. Happy Halloween
